Let me guess, you have a lift and big tires and never regeared axles or changed fluid in Tcase and it crapped out using low range. There is nothing inherently wrong with a 241 if it is properly serviced and utilized (meaning axle gears for tire size and usage) Low range is not meant to make up for poor tire/axle ratio combos. If your gear axle right and change fluid in Tcase every 15K or so you will have a very long service life from it. Just get you another 241 and properly regear axles if you have bog tires and you will not have any more problems. (it will save tranny too which usually fails before Tcase with tire/axle ratio mismatches)

actually no you just made an ass of yourself. my axle is regeared from a 3.73 to 4.10s with only 285s on the corners. it actually broke after getting stuck in 4high. then shearing the teeth of gears and breaking the chain. you need not assume so much. i know the importance of proper gearing. if not done the right way it causes transmission and transfercase failure. as well as axle failure. maybe in the future you should ask questions instead of assuming that every person other than yourself is ill informed.

Some think a 4.10 is a magic gear ratio when it is not. Especially with a 700R4/4L60 and 33 inch tires. There will always be diehards that think 4.10's are the holy grail of gears but you efforts would have been better spent on 4.56 over 4.10 on your gear upgrade because you really did not upgrade anything overall. You did not do your homework well. As far as it sticking in 4wd high, that would have likely been from a torque bind and forcing it out could break something. Being stuck in 4hi will not break chain or strip gears but leaving it in 4hi hi speed cruise could cause Tcase to over heat and fail. There was some abuse that played a roll in your Tcases failure for sure because 241's are not bad Tcases by design. A close inspection of internals would reveal the cause. They are kinda a improved NP208 which is not a bad Tcase either if used and serviced properly. BTW, I have a old J20 jeep with Quadratrac full time 4x4 and by design 100 % of drive torque (all on it) passes through chain and I have towed with it plowed snow with it and worked it extremely hard and chain never failed. I did service it regularly with fluid changes and had 4.10 gears turning 30 inches tires. Drive chains can suffer a shorter life under hard usage if fluid is not serviced regularly.

i really had no homework to *** truthfully i was given a rarely used 14 bolt rear(less than 45000 miles). not something i could pass up. it had 4.10s already installed by the factory im assuming. i know its not the holy grail of gears. i was thinking more along the lines of 4.88s or even 5.13s for my soon to be lifted six inches and rolling 35s, 96 chevy. i was also thinking of a brand new 4l80 with a 241 case
