If you are dead set on 35s, lose te 351M. Build a stock 302, maybe upgrade to a Mallory or MSD ignition and a good flowing exhaust (no straight pipes though). Six inch lift, overdrive tranny, 4.56 gears, and open diffs. Although, a 4 inch lift and 33s look just as good and will give you better mileage. I would look for a wrecked EFI truck and make the conversion to fuel injected.

With the 351M, about 8 or 9 mpg. With the 302, mallory dual point distributor, Taylor 8mm wires, Accel Super Stock coil, Bosch platnium plugs, long tube headers, 2 1/2" pipes, and Flowmaster mufflers with a C4 tranny and 4.11 gears about 12 to 13 mpg (my brother has that set up in his 77). The 96 F150 I had with all stock engine and tranny with 6 inch lift 4.56 gears and 35x14.50 boggers got 14 to 16, then a tad better with the 35" Goodyear Wrangler MTRs.

When you find that EFI truck make sure you get the tranny as well, yours won't fit on a 302. If I were going to do all that swapping I'd step up to a 351W.

Well here we go on stirring upstuff. I would keep the 351m and make a few changes to engine. First install a new camshaft like comp cams for highway use like 262 duration hyd or hyd roller. The biggest problem with the 351M is low compression. Need around 9to1 compression. The 351m heads are a canted valve design and are superior to any 302/351w head design for trucks. One of the simple tricks to upgrading a 351 is buy a 351cleveland piston and zero deck/machining the engine block. The cleveland piston has a different piston pin dia and need to bush the connection rod small end to proper fit. Hyperutectic sells a good piston for this application. I know you can get 14mpg with a 5speed or better if set up propely. I would run a Msd distributor because of phaseable rotor capabilities. I personally run this stuff and know it. My 460 ford with 450hrsp gets 9 to 12mpg on highway carburated on 40" hawgs,6200lb truck. O'yeah forgot weiand stealth intake for 351M. The 351M once bored .040 is about its last bore job for daily driver. More compression and modern camshaft and timing chain and you have a stout little 351M with decent fuel mileage with 5spd tranny on 35" tire on 4.56 and 2.5 exhaust pipe like mentioned above. Once you go above 4"+ lift need to make sure driveshaft length is good. Might be maxing out driveshaft splines. If you have any more questions drop me a note. These are the truck I like to build and own a 77 ford heavily modified F-150.
