Hi- Am looking for a source for a GM Turbo 400 tranny for a 1972 Jeep Commando. This is the one for a 4WD where the transfer case bolts directly to the rear of the tranny. Any help on sources would be wonderful!!

Jeep used a THM 400 that differed only in bell housing pattern and output shaft in some applications, otherwise it was a "std" THM 400. You need to be "looking" for a 400 that will bolt to your engine. That is going to be the hardest part if it has a original engine. BTW, usually the is a adapter between tranny and Tcase that some consider part of Tcase. (my 79 has such a adapter from factory)

I have a few amc belled th400 trannies and still have one with the q-trac still bolted on it... they really aren't that hard to find, ya can pick up a cas for upt to 200 bucks and BOP belled th400 goe for 50 bucks as a core for the rest of your hard parts, then ya just need a output shaft for the application ya intend to use it for. ya can get an adaptor from novak or advanced adapters to use the dana 20.

Jeep did not use Qtrac until 73 so this is not a Qtrac Jeep. One possible problem here is that though they used a THM400 through 79 with Qtrac (you could change output shaft) AMC did not standardize bell housing bolt pattern until sometime in mid 70's so you may have a different bolt pattern on your engine than later ones. (after mid 70's all 6's and V8's had same pattern)

I've already gotten rid of all I'm interested in litting go. when I need the parts I don't have to go looking for em, scrap has gone down almost a 100 bucks a ton in the last 2 months... it serves me better to keep it laying around..

Scrap cars here are still 190 a ton and aluminum is 95 cents a pound or 1900 a ton.

If I want to save some of them, I would have them in a building on shelves. There is a big bone yard here that pulls parts from newer cars and trucks and put then in big building on shelves out of weather. Prices are reasonable too. (likely because less lost to rot down in elements) Only parts you might pull are fender and body parts. I have a few extra engines around here but there are on stands out of weather in a heated building and extra tcases out of weather too. Heck I will not even let a mower or tractor sit out.

trannies sit out in the elements their entire lives and in all types of weather under the vehicles, it makes no difference if they sit out. when ya pull em apart they are as clean as the oil thats in em.

There is a big different between sitting in a vehicle mated with other parts and "sealed" so to speak and driven vs laying on the ground in the weather.

nope, they are sealed just as they are in the vehicle, with convertors in all the good cores, dipstick or plugs in the tubes, tv openings and most have yolks or a plug in the extention housings, the pics are only a idea of what I have...
nada... it'll take 20years to rott through the bottom of a pan that may end up on the ground, I garauntee ya my stuff laying out there is in better shape than the stuff inside on a self, cause they are still in oil and sealed away from moisture. theres alot of hard parts inside that are now junk because they were opened and stored for easier access. I've been this stuff my entire life and my old man for 20 years before I came along.

You are wrong on this one. The will rot out internally sitting in elements drawing moisture with temperature and humidity changes in weather and unlike one being used, never heating up enough to drive moisture out. Maybe it has worked for you but I would not use a tranny laying in weather for a few years. No way. Too much trouble to change it to risk it.
