I have an 86 Jeep Wagoneer Limited with the 2.5 four cylinder and automatic transmission. I need to know the trans type and transfer case type. i have a 350 V8 that i want to put in and i need to know if the stock drivetrain can handle it. and i want to get rid of the Select-trac 4wheel drive selector. i would like to put a lever on it. if anybody can help, it would be get. thank you.

Tranny is a Chrysler 904 or 909 (909 is a 904 with a locking converter) It is considered a LD tranny. "If" you could fit a 350 in there (which is not likely without a lot of cutting and then you would have a vehicle of questionable value) the tranny would not last. The AMC does share bolt pattern with SB GM which also means that a GM 2.8, 3.1, 3.4 and 3.8 V6 would fit and bolt in pretty easy.

Stock drivetrain will not withstand a small block chev. The 84-86 XJ's also came with a 2.8 GM engine as an option with the same auto tranny and t-case behind it. Unfortunatey, that engine was carbureted and not much better than the 2.5 4 popper. Now, there are companies that offer a stroked 2.8 crate engine, and I believe a 2.8 from a Camaro (fuel injected!) will bolt in with a few modifications and a lot of wiring harness work. Thing is, in the end you still have a 2.8 XJ that is a bit underpowered.

The 2.8, 3.1 and 3.4 all share same basic block and a 2.8 can be stroked easily. Even a 2.8 can do a fine job with a little tweaking and a proper set of gears behind it. A 2.8 is capable of some good power but it is a function of torque and RPM and it needs to rev up to use it and this is were proper gears come in. 2.5 powered Wagoneers with automatics came with 3.54 axle ratios. CHerokees which used same body came with 4.10's with a stick and a 2.5. A warmed up 2.8 with 4.10's or 4.56 would do a much better job than what you have now. BTW, I own a 2000 Cherokee with a 2.5 and 5 speed that I bought new. It is wifes car and it has just shy of 100K miles on it now and never wished it had a 6 for how it is used. just about all of its miles are urban/city and with its 4.10 gear and stock tire sizes it runs well and is not bad on gas either averaging around 20 to low 20's in town with A/C and mid 20's on the road. It pulls OD well and rarely needs a down shift even on fairly steep grades. The engine, axle ratio, tranny and tire size is well matched for its usage.

I have the 350 in the garage. and it is not going to be 500 hp notor. it is going to be stock. Adv. Adapters have bolt in mounts. would it just be better to find a th350 or 400 with transfer case and drop it in. i don't plan on doing anything extreme. just help get to some of my hunting spots in MI. and if i keep the stock drivetrain, is there any way to convert the select-trac to have a lever? thanks for all the help.

At most I would use a GM 4.3 in it. Bigger is not always better and 4.3 will be a tight fit of sorts in side clearance but a lot better than a 350 because it is shorter and lighter and easier to cool. Some may disagree with me but a big heavy engine and front end is not the best ticket here for a reliable hunting vehicle. If you use a 4.3, you want a 95 or later as they have a balancer shaft added to them and they are V8 smooth. (some 94's had them but all 95's and on do) If you want a power boost the 4.3 would be a more viable route here and less strain on stock drive train too and cheaper to feed as well which means more range/time/days in the woods before you have to refuel. Also, that year Jeep you have has a shorter engine bay than later models when they started using in line six. When they switched from 2.8 to 4.0 they had to "pack in" firewall and tweak front grill area to gain more room in length.
