I JUST BOUGHT A 1971 BLAZER.  355 CI WITH 411 POSI GEARS IN FRONT AND BACK.  IT HAS A 4 INCH BODY AND 3 INCH SUSPENTION LIFT ON IT.  WHAT WOULD YOU DO?  I LIKE THE LOOK OF BIG WIDE BUBBLE TIRE AND SMALL RIM.  BE LITTLE MUD MOSTLY STREET AND SAND AND JUST PLAYING AROUND IN WITH THE FAMILY.  NOT SURE ON TIRE OR RIM.  I WANT SOMETHING THAT LOOKS NICE NOT STEEL. MAYBE ALL TERRAINS OR SOMETHING COMPARABLE.  WOULD 38'S FIT?

A couple of problems here. First 4.10 is a great off road ratio for stock or near stock tire sizes, not 38's. Second, if you have stock axles they are not going to last long with 38's anyway. Not trying to be a deal killer here but if you really want 38's, you need to upgrade axles and gears and then figure out wheels and tire clearance. ALso if this posi is in the form of spider gear replacement lockers, it is going to break front stock axles pretty quick with 38's in sand.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY SNOMAN.  WHAT ABOUT 36'S?  WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR UPGRADES?

Generally my feeling on this is those axles are pretty solid up to 33's and 35's are stretching it but if you do not lock axles it should do okay. I tend to be a bit conservative and some might tell you bigger is okay but then you are the one that has to pay for breakage not them. If you plan to play real hard I would do 33's with a mild lift to keep CG lower (lower CG is always a good thing off road and on dunes) If you stay go with 33's you can likely get by with present gearing too. Then one day when you really want to do 38's, line up some bigger axles and gears first and then lift and mod as needed for then to work. I think you will be happier this route. Granting it is not the lift you want right now but then you are not going to be breaking things and spend a lot of money either regear axles that are really to small for this use or have a slug because with stock gears and 38's it will be at times.
