My 1996 trooper has 120000 miles on it and it started ticking on the upper part of the motor.  I use to go away but now after it runs a bit it just get quiet but doesn't go away.  the highest that the oil pressure goes is 80 that is on the freeway.  What could it be and what are my options?

Liters are getting worn or dirty. Usually it is because oil is not keeping it clean enough or you are not changing it enough.

I bought it used it had 110000 on it and started ticking right away. I have change the oil a number of times and add some cleaner that the mechanic recommended. Should I change the lifters or just get a new motor?

you can probably do a lifter adjustment to tighten em back up...my 86 sub had the 350 w/126000miles when I bought it and the lifters on both heads were clackety loud and I adjusted them back to spec and never had a problem w/noise or anything else w/engine...in fact my tranny went out before the engine did...and no I had 30" tires so that wasnt the cause.

Personally I would not worry about it much unless it gets really loud.

I think that my troop has an over head cam I don't think you can adjust the lifters I may be wrong there.

OHC cam engines are adjustable in lash "if" they have mechanical lifters. If they are hydraulic then they usually are not. They engine should have hydraulic lifters.

So if it has hydraulic lifter then do you replace them or again is it just better to replace the engine

Sometimes you can remove lifters, clean them and reinstall them and they work but you have to return them to same bores when you do this or it could damage cam. As I understand you problem it comes and goes so I would use some good oil and change oil and filter a few times ever 1500 to 2000 miles a few times and see it it gets better before I would worry about replacing lifters.

Go get a Chilton or Haines repair manual and it tells you how to adjust them

Top end ticks are common in these engines...good way to fix it is to run a good motor oil in it. Mine 93 Rodeo had the exact same problem and i was told to run Mobil 1 0W-30 Synthetic in it. Tick went away. And as to the replacing issue....you dont ever need/want to replace an engine over piddly things such as a tick...Repair shop fix to have them go thru and solve a tick (assuming you dont want to do it yourself) 300-500 bucks tops...a new engine....500-1000 bucks plus shop fees...unless you do it yourself....still your paying more than it would cost to fix it.
