snoman... do you have the link to your reference page for axle information... i think i have a line on one of those old axles you had mentioned... it's in a seventy something gmc pickup... has a big round pumpkin with a third member and a rear cover as well... right?
any info would be appreciated since my pinion shattered on my dana 70U...

speaking of which... is it still a dana 70 in newer ford 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks?

thank you

the newer fords use either the sterling 10.25 axles or the 10.50 axle for the one ton or diesel
Solid axle chevys can't be beat!
My dream truck: 73-91 chevy 3500 crew cab srw with dana 60/14bolt, 6 inc long travel lift with KING shocks, 37 inc tires and a 24v cummins diesel, nv5600 and np205

I have some service manuals that cover the HO72 but not a link handy. There was only two axles that looked like that. There was a HO52 and a HO72. They look the same except the 72 has a bolt on drivers side on 3rd member near where pinion rides on ring gear that adjusts thrust pad to limit ring gear deflection under severe torque starting loads. The 52 does not have this.

gotmike, a friend of mine pulls a 99 Powerstroke and it came factory with  the sterling diff. and he did nothing but break parts with it.  Broke axles left and right, pinion, gears, you name it.. then swicthed to a dana 80 increased power, and hasnt broken a thing.  anyone know what came factory in a mid eighty's 3/4 ton chevy pickup? a friend of mine has some laying around.. i was told it might be a corp 14 bolt. this sound true?

It could have either a 9.5 SF or 10.5 FF. Easy to ID because FF has hubs sticking through wheels a few inches. The 9.5 is no cream puff though and is a pretty sturdy axle. It is about the equal of a D60.

I am very interested in this axle. I have a Dodge W-150 and i'm looking for a strong rearend that will have no problem carrying 40x14.50 mud grips in thick mud and on highway. I was leaning toward using 4.11 gearing so I could get near 10 MPG but would go for maybe the rearend out of a 3/4 ton. Is this 4.57 just an odd gear like 4.11's? And how would this axle work under a Dodge?

Your are kidding right? 4.10's with 40's? It will be a slug and it will save you no MPG either. You will have a better shot at best possible MPG with a 4.88 or 5.13 (and a lot more power too) BTW, 4.10's with 40's is kinda like 3.07 gears with 30's before you ad the extra drag of lift and tire. 4.10's would make for a good parking lot queen though.

I wish someone would make a chart that explains what gears to go to what tire size and then to what tranny. I just laugh at all this stuff that is repeated over and over again about these gears. This guy has a legit purpose built puller that has extreme HP and TQ that some guys here can only dream of and wants an axle for it. I know of a few but don't know if the guy will let them go yet. He's an old farmer and likes to hang on to old trucks for some reason. I will check tomorrow and find out for sure. Last time I asked him about them he told me they weren't for sale. I just seen the 64 Chev 4x4 out in front today when I drove past his place, I will be stopping by tomorrow to check that out and find out about the axles also.
