oka i know against alot of peoples advice on my motor, i will be running a tuned up 366 BB im going for longevity here its in a 81 chev should i keep my standard 4speed that hasnt steered me wrong or should i keep trying for an automatic this truck is always in a mud whole its been in the family longer then i have, and it never gets washed i like it better when its mudding i never built to stay clean,so is the standard a good or bad idea. If i go auto it will be a th400 but what else would i have to change.
beauty is more then rust deep

Automatics with torque converters can multiply your torque, an advantage over manuals. My preference is the later ('87-'92) 700R4/4L60 transmissions with an overdrive. These have many improvements over the early 700's. They can also be beefed up the take over 700 ft-lbs of torque, if needed and you have the cash.

If it's a mud truck stuff a TH400 under it and call it a day.

I disagree, the more gears they better even in mud because you can gear deeper still in axle and still have same top gear effective ratio which means if you do it right, you do not even need low range for runs. You in effect can have a even deeper first gear.

I agree with snoman, go standard. Standard transmissions give you more control over the truck and let you do cooler things than your friends.

I've wheeled trucks with manuals and autos, even had both in 1 of the trucks, and a propely built for the use auto wins everytime. If you ever get out of the mud and onto the rocks, you'll love an auto even more.
