I have a 78 blazer with:400 ci with kn air filter, edelbrock carb and intake , roller rockers , header and accel hei ignition. The truck did not originally come with a tach so how do you connect an aftermarket tach to the distributer which is where it goes right? im new to this

When you buy the tach it should say where to hook it up. I believe the last time I hooked one up to a vehicle with a distributer the wire hooked to the positive side of the coil... I could be wrong though...

The tach I hooked up in the past had 3 wires, Im thinking they were white, green, and black maybe. The green wire hooked to the tach, the white one was the backlight power which had to be hooked to the vehicle light switch or fuse block where the lights were, and the third wire was either red or black and Im thinking it was a ground but its been a few years back and I dont have the truck anymore so I cant remember.

The HEI distributors have a terminal in the cap to connect that tach wire too, it is next to the battery power terminal; both of those terminals are in front of the modual to coil harness connected to cap.

mine has 4 wires too... it is an autometer 3 1/2".. most tachs Ive installed had 4 wires.... GREEN goes to the dist. the hei has a male spade connecter on the cap with the other connections, if you dont have a factory tach, this will not have anything plugged into it.... BLACK is the ground, hook this to a good chassis ground. you should be able to use the dash for a ground... RED is power, run this to your fuse panel. you should have a male spade connector on it marked IGN... and WHITE is for illumination, run this to the fuse panel on the male spade connector marked LTS or lights(dash illumination) be sure you run the green wire through a grommet in the firewall so it doesnt short out on metal
