I just bought an 88 3/4 ton suburban. ITs completely stock and its mainly for offroad. I know i have the 9.5 gm 14 bolt in the rear but what is in the front? I want to go with a 4" anf 35's or 33's what would you guys reccomend and a gear change to maybe a 4:10 or 4:54 and of course lockers front and rear. And opinions and advice are greatly appreciated. I am also getting a new 700r4 and a 375hp sbc.

Rear axle is plenty strong if it is a 9.5 14 bolt. I would not lock front axle. Especially with 35's and besides, locked front axles are over rated because they do not guide well and times and add a lot of steering bind too. Replacement lockers cannot power both wheels are different speed and to need to to guide and steer wheel. On axle ratio, 4.56 with 33's and 4.88 with 35's. 700R4 has a very tall OD and both these combos are pretty mild cruising in OD. Burbs are big heavy vehicles and they need serious gears to do there best.

You should have a 10-Bolt 8.5 in the front if its original. On the gearing, I'd go with what SnoMan recommends, although on the locker part, it depends on what type you use but any locker in the front will hinder steering. I had an Auburn cone type in the front of an '83 Blazer that worked nice for me. It was a bit aggressive but would still break loose when I cornered. I ran 4.88 gears and 35s with a 300hp 350tq sb350, 700R4/208 and it worked nice for me. Sounds like you have a nice plan for a nice rig. Good luck!

Ok on the front what should i do then? a limited slip, maybe an ARB i want it to have good off road capability as i have a new pickup that i drive on a daily basis so the burb can lack some creature comforts

ARB is the best in my opinion. It just costs alot. If money isn't an issue, go for it. Even better, install a Dana 60 if money isn't an issue.

Actually a True Trax gear based LSD play really well on a steering axle. They have been using gear based LSD's on this basic design in OshKosh plow trucks for close to 40 years now and there is nothing even remotely wimpy about those trucks.

You are correct. I haven't had one of those. I just shy away from the LSD stuff because of the experiences I;ve had in the past. I've broke a 10.5 LSD, three 8.5 LSDs, and to me, thats alot of wasted money. I know the True Trax are the strongest in the LSD area (from what I've been told), I just haven't had any luck with the LSD stuff. The ARB units are sweet and the same with the Detroit Locker but I know those are very aggressive for the front axles, especially in a 8.5.

Well i was just going over the burb today and realized i have a three speed auto and not a 700r4. I am gonna put the od tranny in there but what will i have to do to achieve this? Will i have to change the column and the tranny mount or what? any help very appreciated.

Well then, that could be a good thing. I'm sure its a TH400 with a NP208 also, and it probably has 4.10 gears in it too. I wouldn't change it to aod such as the 700R4 unless you spend lots of money in gear changes and drivelines... the list goes on and on. If you do change it to the OD, you don't need to change the column, just the indicator that is behind the instrument cluster. In 10 minutes you can do that. As for the mounts, you may or may not have to, just depends on what adapter you have for the OD tranny.

I think the front could be a Dana 44.The know they were under K20 pick ups.Not sure about the subs though. The 700R4 has a lower first gear then the th400.

The front is not a Dana. In Chevrolet trucks, they stopped the front Danas in 78-79 and put the corporate 10-bolt 8.5 in front

This is not a hard swap and pretty much a bolt in with a few parts changes because 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton burb used same frame then and Tcase. You are making more out of this than there is. THM400 was a great tranny 20 or 30 years ago but not today. It is very dated and inefficient.

Yeah, they did.But like I said it was in a K20.They change the name in 83 or so(I think?)I wanst sure when they changed them since I've seen a short bed k1500 (84) witha 44 in the front and a 10 in the back

If it was an 84, had a Dana 44, it wasn't the original front end from the factory. As for the rear axles, they used the 10 and 12 bolts in the mid 80s.
