I once let the oil in my camaro go to 7000(Oops) miles with Q 10-30 and it came out looking ok.But the filter weight about 5 pounds.I would change it at 3000.Just so my engine would last longer.

If you want to run it past 3K miles, simply change filter and top it off with fresh oil and then change everything at 6K. Some will call this over kill but I call it cheap insurance.

You can run the oil at least 8k miles depending on the use.

Oil still get dirty even if it does not break down which many seem to forget and only changing it get all the contamination out. Changing oil often is best thing you can do for your 4x4. BTW, do not forget axles and Tcase too as they should be changed too from time to time.

If you look at your manufacturer reccomendations they may not be every 3000 it may be 5k or more. I know my dodge all be it a diesel is 15k if you are on highway and 7.5k in extreme conditions. I think you should do what makes you comfortable. If you like 3k and it amkes you feel good about the situation do it. Amsol is good oil so you should be fine. And like snowman said lots of people change the oil every 6 and the filter every 3. What does amsoil say about it. I am sure they have done breakdown tests and such. Send oil samples off periodically and go by that.

Your CTD also hold what 14 quarts and has a big filter too. Put a 10 quart pan on a gas motor and you could safely run a very long time.

This whole "extended"oil change intervals started in 80's as a marketing ploy, car prices were climbing and one of the selling features they advertised was reduced maintenance costs. It just kinda got out of hand. The "tests" they do today is how far they can stretch oil for advertisement in sales verse getting through engine warranty period. You could only change oil a few times in first 50K miles or so and it will likely still run well. What would be different though is how engine would be for second and third (and so on) 50K miles segments.
