78 chevy, straight6(78,000k miles), 2door, long box, auto trans. on this tuck i have solid front and rear steel bumper. and i was thinking of getting a 6inch suspension lift and put some 35's or 38 off-road tires for it. any suggestions for a on road/ off-road truck?

go with a four inch lift, it requires no brake line lengthining, no angle ajustments, and will let you use those 35's that you want

IF YOU DECIDE YOU WANT TO GO BIGGER THAN THE 35 GO WITH THE 6INCH AND MABY UPGRADE TO A DANA 60 FRONT AND 14 BOLT REAR I RUN THESE ON MY RIG WITH 4:56 GEARS YOU MAY WANT TO GO A LITTLE HIGHER IN RANGE THOUGH FOR FUEL MILEAGE. MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE LOWERING BLOCKS IN THE SPACER AND THE TRANFERCASE OR YOU WILL EAT ALOT OF UJOINTS LATER MAN

u can stuff 35's underneath that with no lift wut so ever all u need to do is trim the fenders. n if u want a lil bit more height u can stuff an add a leaf or 2 at all 4 corners each add-a-leaf will give u about 2 inches. n for 35's somewhere around 4:10 to 4:56 will work nicely. n i would suggest a new steering stablilizer prolly a double if ur goin over 35's. but u dont need much lift with them older chevys. i plan on doing 6" lift springs with 2" shackles for 40" on my 76' n if u go over 35's a dana 60 would be nice if u like to play hard

so i wanna go with 35's to see how i feel with them then i'll prolly go bigger but i want to get a 6in susp lift so i can go bigger if i want to. but i will drive this to and from off roading stuff like( camping, fishing, hunting, and just screwing around off road) so do i have to change my gear ratio, and upgrade to a bigger frony and rear axel?

ya you would def have to change your gears. you have to for almost any change in tire size. gear is a big portion of wut makes a good truck for offroading n horsepower aint always the answer like most ppl think. n if ur going over 35's i would recomend a dana 60 front n gm 14 bolt full floater rear like i've seen 10 bolt fronts survive 44" tires but it died after a lil while blew the pinion apart then again it was too high of gears n was crankin out a bit of horsepower well neways it survived a lot longer than i figured it would. in the end it would just be cheaper to do it right the first time find urself a good dana 60 front n stuff it under there. i'm still lookin for a really cheap used one myself.. havin a hard time wen all i really need is the housing cuz i gotta change all the parts neways.... they seem kinda rare n expensive in my area... the cheapest i found a dana 60 around here so far has been $1200 n it was a junkyard special...

You are absolutely right, D60's are very hard to find.. at least that are in shape to try and rebuild, and when you do find them, they are almost always way expensive, by the time you get done cleaning them up and restoring the thing, you can almost just buy a new one from someplace like Dynatrac. With a good rear end, front 10 bolts and D44's are ok if you aren't out there just trying to break something. A guy can also upgrade the front shafts to CrMo for about $250.
