hey gang. newbie to this site. could use some help. got an o2 2500 hd 6.0. i took it off road and got it stuck. while trying to get it out i lost all power to the wheels. torque converter? it developed a whine from the trans a while ago. never got worse never went away. when i asked a friend with a similar prob his dealer said it was the converter. does that condition make the converter a weak link? i'm trying to educate myself so when i take it in i have a basic idea what my guy suggets and what should be looked at. thanx for any feed back.

Whine was likely the front pump. When it goes tranny will not do squat. When converter goes it will usually still move but will be sluggish as there will only be fluid coupling and no torque multiplication. Sounds like you kinda cooked/blew tranny trying to get it out.

Depends on where you go and also what trans it has. If its the 4L80E you might want to check into the GM SRTA trans as they are the best for warranty but they cost a little more. You could be looking at about $1000-2500 depending on where you go and again what trans you have. Good luck on that costly mistake.
Can I just ask if it was one of those mistakes that you just happened to go from forward to reverse and back trying to rock it? If so, it may have blown the reaction carrier/s in the bottom end of the trans. Hopefully not. I've been down that road a couple times before and it wasn't fun. Costly too.

no i didn't rock it back and fourth cuz my front end was too far down in the water. there was no traction at all. i think it happened when they tried pullin me out i tried too hard to help and the r's were too high. like i said before the tranny  had a whine before probably from the pump and the extra goose killed it.

That sounds like it could be the pump then. I just know the rockin action may cause the same symptoms. Good luck getting it repaired.

I would have it gone through just to be sure that its all fresh again even if it was recent. I wouldn't chance anything because of the expense of the job as it is. It might cost a little but it will end up costing more to do it again if something else is wrong.

i agree with snow man i think your trans is shot i did the same thing to my 2003 2500 hd almost all of the 2500hd trucks have the 4l80e unless it is a diesel then they all have the alisson. i would recommend a gm rebuild they have a way better warranty that is what i installed in my truck they are pricey but worth the money if you blow it up again

Some 4L80e's in some application use a dual stator torque converter which increases torque multiplication at stall up to 3x (single stator does 2x or a bit more). The bad side of this is when you ride stall a lot its heats fluid up more so it is easier to toast it under right conditions. This can be kinda easy to do sometimes with a lift big tires and stock gears. You want to watch tranny temps but sometimes you can flash converter and pump temps way up high before it shows on tranny temp gauge (if you have one)
