Ditch the cat?

I have a 96 grand Cherokee 5.2L V8 and I want to ditch the cat for 2 reasons.
1)Supposedly they make your vehicle run worse that if there was no cat. And I have idling problems so could this maybe fix that?
2)I want it louder and was told the easiest way was to ditch the cat.
Are these true and if I do ditch the cat what will be the consequences? I know it has sensors and whatnot.

The "cats" are there for emission reasons and if youre vehicle has a computer which it does, it takes the readings from the 02 sensors and calculates the air/fuel mixture and makes adjustments that are needed for the engine to run properly. If you have idling issues, plug in the diagnostic computer and see if there is any codes. If not, then the cat may need to be replaced. I have a 91 Chevy truck and just cut my cat off and replaced it with another piece of pipe and there was a reason for this (my cat was plugged up), I have a new one installed now but it does make it a little bit louder but not what you might want. Without the cat, I lost about 4-6 miles per gallon although the power was a little better, I can sacrifice that for a motor that runs better and gets better mileage. As for me, I'd get a good quality high-flow cat from a performance exhaust shop and you won't really notice it is even on the vehicle and the computer will read like it is supposed to. depends on if your O2 is before or after the cat. or before both. ive got a 95 f150 and i was told by my exhaust guy that my main cat was missing, and i just have my pre-cat. the 02 sensor is before the cat to my computer wouldnt get weird readings with it gone.

You are correct on that. I failed to mention that it does matter where the sensors are and how many. Thanks for that info.
