as far as rebuilding goes just have the cylinder walls honed, replace rings and bearings, and pretty much just put everything back where you found it lol. as far as power a good off road cam or one that has a idle-5000rpm range, low rise dual plane intake, tri-y headers(make sure the primaries arent huge), maybe an edelbrock carb to get some more fuel to it.

bore the cylinders not just hone them. if u can afford it get a 383 stroker kit for it. the added to torque u get from the longer stroke is well worth it.

well he said he wanted a mild and i myself consider a 383 to be kinda on the wild side.

you might consider a crate motor for around $2000. a lot less work and you basically just drop it in and go.

Dont start out big with a bunch of boring and things like that.  Tear it down systematically, make sure everything is organized, and get a rebuilding manual if u need it.  Get a cheap honing tool from Napa, and make sure that the lines scribed by the hone cris cross at a 60 degree angle.  Clean the block good, and buy a master rebuild kit.  Buy a moly base grease from Napa, (CRC is the best) and coat all moving parts good.  A stock motor is fine, so dont worry about many upgrades.

yeah iv thought about all that but then i wouldnt know what size of rings to get and that fun stuff so i was gunna tak the block in have them hone and all im not gunna bore it out cuz i wonna get as many rebuilds as i can out of the same block but i shouldnt havta rebuild for years after this im thinkin cuz of the amount of time i work and the weather that it would take 1-2 weeks to do a rebuild or i probly could change the motor in a weekend

im not gunna go crazy with this build im just gunna do a very mild build i do good work and i pay attention to detail

crate motor--1500-2500
used motor--- 500
rebuild---200-500

your wasting your time if you are gonna just hone the block. take it to a machine shop and have the block checked. then from there you will know what you need to do for machine work to the block. i built a 355 and i wish i would have just spent the extra money to do the 383. a 383 is not a wild build. its just a little extra machine work to clearance the block.

but you also have to consider that your gonna have to pay for machining and a stroker kit. a good stroker kit, not cheap crap, is gonna run a around $1500 and thats with you putting it together.

summit racing sell a cast stroker kit from $750 and $1,000. the 1500 kit is rated for 700 hp. i don't think that is what he is going for. if you do what your talking about you have to start with a really good low mileage low abuse block, crank, and rods. until you start checking specs for the bores the cam journals main saddles and the deck you really don't know what you are going to actually need for a rebuild.
