A bit of a long story so bear with me please...
During a recent camping I was taking my fairly new to me F250 down a trail to the campsite. I was in 2wd because the trail, while wet, had a hard bottom to it. As I entered a small mud hole I ran over a stick that was across the trail with the left front tire. After the left front passed over it the stick popped up and hit the shift cable for the auto transmission right where it attaches to the arm that controls what gear the transmission is in. This breaks the plastic piece that attaches the cable to the arm and tears all ten wires from the plug that attaches to the trans at that point. When the stick hit the arm it threw the trans into reverse, thankfully i was at idle when it happened. This leaves me stuck in reverse with no control over what gear I am in from the cab. I flipped the switch on the dash to put the truck in 4hi but didnt get a 4wd light on the instrument panel. I tried to back the truck out of the hole, since reverse was all I had, but with the weight of the 7.3L up front it wouldnt do that. So I turned the truck off.
A friend of mine was on the way down to where I was so I got into contact with him after walking to get cell signal. In the mean time I crawled under the truck in the mud to access the damage and to manually shift the truck into neutral. During this I noticed that while my truck has the factory Off-Road pkg that the transmission was very unprotected. After shifting it into neutral I crawled out to start the truck but it still wouldnt start. Im guessing that the cluster of wires that were torn free from the trans had one wire that told the truck if it was in neutral or park and that it was ok to start. My friend shows up and with the truck in park I apparently hit some wires just right and he started the truck. So with me under a running truck I move the shift arm thingy with my friend in the truck with the pbrake and brake applied. We drive the truck on into camp to further access the damage and that was when I noticed that I had the 4wd light but wasnt in 4wd. So I got out a tried manually locking the hubs and that worked. Im guessing that one of the wires tore out was for signaling the auto hubs to engage. Very thankful for the manual locking backup on the hubs.
Long story short, I put the truck into drive and ran it home that way. Currently waiting on replacement parts. So I guess my question to yall is, does anyone make a skid plate that covers the transmission for this truck?
Thanks, blkbird305
