It is time for the first oil change for my new 2008 Ranger.  I have just started doing research on synthetic oils and standard/regular oils.  My truck is in the beginning stages of being built up for off-roading.  What do some of y'all recommend when it comes to using synthetic or regular oil?  I have always used Havoline in my vehicles but i now live in the northern mountains of North Carolina which can be brutal when it comes to winter weather.  I have read that the synthetic oil does better in cold weather cranking conditions, especially Red Line but I'm not familiar with the brand Red Line, is this true?? Another question are their any other brands that y'all wold recommend over Havoline or Red Line??

My Ranger has had nothing but Mobil 1 from it's first oil change. 145,000 miles later still going strong.

I'm a big fan of synthetics.

Are you going to be doing your own oil changes? How concerned are you about warranty?

Being an '08 I'd take it to the dealer to change the oil, I do this with my '07 and they use a semi-synthetic, or you can pay extra for full.

On my Ranger though I do it myself and it gets only Mobil 1 and a K&N oil filter, as I said before. Speaking of which, I've got to do that tonight... thanks for reminding me!

Care to elaborate? That's a pretty blanket statement.

I have been running Mobil 1 10w-40 on my truck for over a year now. Its a 95 F150 with 175k miles. When i was using conventional oil the inside of my valve covers looked like a banana milkshake. The Mobil 1 got rid of that and everything looks brand new.

Hate to kill y'alls moble one party. Castrol semi syn and the truck has over 215,000 miles on the orginal engine and never been rebuilt. I always ran 5-30, in Fl-Delware all seasons. Then I sold it and the guy is still running the same oil and has had it for 3 years no problems. My new truck I run Amsoil I like changing my oil every 10-15,000 miles, so far so good at 60,000 miles today. Hey this is an old post 4WOR Editor. LOL

My Friend Has an 1989 Chevy 4x4 with a 350 pushing 267,000 miles on the original engine NO OVERHAUL. He just uses what ever is cheapest and that truck runs like a top. He bought it with like 150,000 miles and really tore up the body. He uses it as a scrapyard truck, hauling anything that is worth something lol. Let me tell you that is a definate work horse that just wont quit.
