What about a 4 cylinder B series Cummins diesel?? It would have tons of torque. California smog laws make this idea a no go??

fred if you dont want to get a lot more power just go with either the 2JZ(supra) stock it would have plenty of power and would make you more comfortable on the LA freeways or get the 4BT cummins it should have about the same horse as the taco I4 but double the torque which would help a lot with the rockcrawling you do with clampy and would have plenty of power for the mud and sand as you now know from the rubiwagon and its 6BT and its easy to pass emmisions if you do the exhaust right and have enough air(turbos) to compensate for the fuel so you dont have black smoke plus you would get phenonimal mileage plus you can put a cool chrome stack on clampy im going to be looking at getting a 4BT for my 90 ranger as soon as im out of high school and have another daily driver

Clampy is my hero.  His story made the idea of building up a trail rig realistic in the eyes of many people.

2.7L taco is the way to go.  Good choice.

Maybe some other more modern Toyota parts to go with it?

ok i was up at marlin crawler last friday and we did some more work to the little monster.  Rocky, who works at the shop up there, is doing an awesome job cleaning off the old shock hoops and leftover mess from the solid axle swap.  I'll post some pics here and in the blogs section.

It's a little late now but I would have said to import a diesel from a Toyota Hilux and swap that in and built it up.

What about the 4 cylinder 2.8L diesel from a Jeep Liberty CRD?  Don't know how you'd get it all to bolt up though...
