are performance chips really safe???

i was thinking about putting a jet chip(i know their overated but i have seen real power and mpg increases so i know they do help) in my 1993 z71. the truck has 242,000 miles and the motor has maybe 100,000 and was curious as to could the chip damage the motor in any way?
