Ok.  Let me first say that I am a total newbie when it comes to trucks and off roading etc.

I am interested in getting into it though and making a hobby out of a project truck etc.

First, I suppose can someone give me the 'rundown' of the essentials of a rally truck.  I'm not saying I'm going to rally, but I'd like to build a truck that could go to the dunes and tear it up.

I'm going to assume you mean "baja" style rally so here's my opinion. Start with either an f-150 or ford ranger with twin traction beam front suspension. in the case of an f-150 leave it stock with 31's or 32's maybe some anti-wrap bars, you'll be amazed at how much fun you can have in the dunes. after gaining some expirience out there you'll want to modify your drivetrain and suspension. but that later
