I pulled the cover off my front axle and found mud!    Is there any type of better seal that might go on the end of the tubes out by the yokes of the axleshafts?

Sounds like you berried it in lake or deep mud. No seal is made to be completely submersible.

I run in the mud all the time, Fl swamps, I keep my breather lines on. Some guys plug them but when the axle gets hot and expands, the air goes out. Then they cool off, in the mud, it sucks all that stuff back in. Your breather line might be broke or clogged. Also Changing the fluid is part of running in mud and don't forget greasing everything. I grease my truck like its a backhoe. The longer it sits in the pit the worse it can get.
