It is time for the first oil change for my new 2008 Ranger. I have just started doing research on synthetic oils and standard/regular oils. My truck is in the beginning stages of being built up for off-roading. What do some of y'all recommend when it comes to using synthetic or regular oil? I have always used Havoline in my vehicles but i now live in the northern mountains of North Carolina which can be brutal when it comes to winter weather. I have read that the synthetic oil does better in cold weather cranking conditions, especially Red Line but I'm not familiar with the brand Red Line, is this true?? Another question are their any other brands that y'all wold recommend over Havoline or Red Line??

i love mobil 1. it did wonders for my f150. its got 165k on it so i run 10w-40. you could probably do 5w-30 in winter and 10w-30 in summer

My Ranger has had nothing but Mobil 1 from it's first oil change. 145,000 miles later still going strong.
I'm a big fan of synthetics.
Are you going to be doing your own oil changes? How concerned are you about warranty?
Being an '08 I'd take it to the dealer to change the oil, I do this with my '07 and they use a semi-synthetic, or you can pay extra for full.
On my Ranger though I do it myself and it gets only Mobil 1 and a K&N oil filter, as I said before. Speaking of which, I've got to do that tonight... thanks for reminding me!

Amsoil with a wix filter...is the best if you have the money.
I run ehter Q full syn with a fram filter. or Quuaker state with the same filter. In my nissan I run cheap dyno bones(mobile1 or supertech)

Care to elaborate? That's a pretty blanket statement.
