Does mud hurt rims?

I just bought a 02' black silverado z71. I would like to put some black chrome or powdercoat rims.I plan on sticking with the stock 16 inch size A few poeple i have talked to said that if i take it off-road the rims will get ruined. does any body have anything to say about this?
And if i stay with what i got which is LT265/75R16. How can i get them to stick out more when i put a lift kit on there

Just as long as you dont leave the mud on the rims for a long time youll be fine. if you put a lift on that truck you might want to up the tires as well but if not then you can get wheel spacers. that will push the tires out for ya.
