can you put a spool in a solid front axel of a 85 yota or do i have to go with lockers?

You technically can, but it's going to make turning very difficult. I would go with a selectable locker in the front if I could. If not then a locker like a Detroit is the next best thing.

Yes, an ARB or e-locker would be the best choice for the front if you can afford it.
