Hi I have been given my cousin's 1987 chev 1 ton crew 4x4 pickup diesel 6.2 low miles.(still have to pick it up out west) My question is can I put an overdrive tranmission in it? I presume it has a 400 auto 3 speed. I would imagine it geared very low and might be a push for hwy. use. Can a newer 400 or 350 or 700 fit , or modify, adaptor ? Much thankful for any help. farmer

depending on what you are gonna do with it is gonna determine what trans would be the best. don't get a 700r4 or 4l60e. if you want to run an auto 4l80e would be your best be for an auto with overdrive. they are expensive though. same with a gear vendors overdrive unit. i would get like an nv4500 5 speed.

Thanks for your reply I would imagine these are computor controled transmissions except the gear venders. Cost is always a concern. Maybe just a gear set change or taller tires to give better performance on the highway. Thanks farmer

Since you don't have an ECU on that rig, I would go with a 4L80, which is basically a TH400 with an OD. The other GM tranny's all have the same bell housing pattern (as long as they came from a Chevy and not a BOP model). Keep in mind though that if you do step away from the TH400, you may have to modify the transfer case for it to mate up. If I recall, your truck should come equipped with a NP208 with a 32 spline female input.
