I'd say $1000-1500 for a decent one, or some where around there. Rusted out ones are pretty cheap but I don't know what you are looking for. If you are looking for a show truck I have no idea.

I'm 16 and I want something that I can learn from, something that can get me around while I still work on it, also what about 78 f150 are they any different? Also is the 351 cleaveland considered a bigblock? and what about the 400ci, why don't I hear anything about it? Anyone know how many miles either of these engines last for???

Remember that a 79 is a 30 year old truck and that you could spend a lot of money repairing it. I would say that 1000 bucks would be the upper limit here and 500 to 1000 the general range.

i don't know how long they last, but a 400 is a smog motor and most people won't take a second look at it or the 351M. There is not much aftermarket support for either motor. I know some people who swear by a 351M and others who wouldn't ever use them. I do not believe a 351W or Cleveland are considered big blocks, or at least in my local mud bogs thay are not considered a bb. Most likely you will find a 1976-1979 F150 with a 351M. These are common trucks and parts are not to ungodly expensive. I'm doing a frame off restore of a 1979 F250 right now.

I have owned 2 351M's, and as long as you don't OVER modify it they are very torquey and stout. It's true, the heads and push rods are 351M only and are not interchangeable, but the top end and block is pretty much 351C. It really depends on what region you are in and shape of the truck for a price. In Florida, a heap is $500-$1000. $1500 for decent mechanical shape, needs body work. $2000-$2500 for pretty good on both sides. I have a bud that spent $4500 and bought a dang nice 78. To clarify, a late 78 and 79 have the square headlights. Early 78's have same grille but round headlights. Some late 79's have a solid front axle. For hardcore flex you may want a solid axle. I have a solid axle on my 79, but the ride is better with TTB and you don't sacrifice a whole lot on the trail. The TTB's were plenty tough, I flogged an 84 TTB with 35's like a madman and never had a problem once I put on Warn Hubs. I'm probably going to rebuild my 351M, but am also asking most of the readers out there what else bolts up to a 351M mated C6 in a seperate thread, just so I have more options available to me. My budget is fixed, and I like options. Hope this helps and good luck to you!
