I have a 1977 chevy with a 350 engine and a 350 auto tranny. I currently have a Holly street avenger 4 barrell I believe it is a 650 or a 670cfm?(also edelbrock performer intake manifold) anyway one or the other i dont know Hollies at all. Anyway when I am on the street I accelerate and move just fine. Heres the problem, when I try to go to the hills and try to go up a hill i dont even spin out or anything! It just bogs and extremely slowly picks up(keep in mind this is like on a flat spot before I hit the hill) then when I do hit the hill tires dont spin, I am flooring the pedel. The engine just sits there esssentially kind of reved and I am not moving, when I let off the pedel it usually dies and I roll backward! I cannot even burn out on a flat dirt stretch, it bogs and very slowly picks up rpm. Now I just bought the thing so I am getting to know her. the old guy I bought it from kept it in extremely great shape, however at one point he busted the distrubuter cap and internels all to heck somehow. he said he fixed it. but looking around I found plastic and metal peices inside the dist cap. I ended up replacing the cap and roter and cleaned it up. there is also a little chunk missing on the metal part that he filled in with solder.  Also I have no idea when he replaced the fuel filter, and looking down the carb it is charcol black. is my prob a dist prob? fuel filter? timing? or all? help! me please! Do I need a edelbrock off road carb? or something better than a street avenger.

sounds like you have a combination of many problems timing is were i would start along with a fuel filter. check the timing adjust it if it needs it. may also need to have the carb adjuster. good luck

I agree with BillyCD. Also, vaccum leaks and I have a holly 650 on a 350 and mine was dying to. It ran fine on the road and then I parked it for a week and the thing would not run. I pulled the top half, and the float area was full of slug. I cleaned it out with paper towels and carb cleaner. Blew out all four injector tits under the float, and all kind of crap came out of those pin holes. Durning regular driving the slug was at the back and the injector where in the middle and when i stopped it moved foward over the injector openings. It runs great now.

Couple of things:  Checkyour timing, replace the rotor and cap on the distributor (or get a HEI unit from a junkyard enginge), and get your carb cleaned out.
