Hello

I have been reading your magazine for years now, but I am looking at getting my first 4x4. I want it to be trail ready and must handle canadain winters. I was going to get a jeep but I am not sure now if that is a good idea with all the auto maker stuff. So should I stay with the jeep or should I look at getting something like a Ford that might be around longer. I need it to be reasonably good on gas and great on the trail. Also have available parts for it. Not sure what to get, any suggestions on the matter would help.

Thanks

Zach

If you need it to be GREAT on the trail, I'd look hard at 3 rigs, depending on the size you need.  The first would be a Dodge Power Wagon.  Good payload capacity, tough, solid axles, and front and rear selectable lockers with a suspension big enough to clear 33's from the factory.  If small size and maneuverability are more important, the Wrangler Rubicon's are pretty tough to beat.  Flexyt suspension, tough, full-sized spec axles, and terrific aftermarket support make it a great rig.  If you want a bit of comfort and luxury while 'wheeling, the H3 Hummers are nice.  They have a good suspension (not quite as good as the Wrangler), a solid interior, and a selectable locker combined with the softer on road ride of IFS.  If used is an option, I'd throw in aused Grand Cherokee with the V8 and Overland suspension.

Toyota Tacoma Research
Toyota Tacoma Being one of the most popular cars in its class, the Toyota Tacoma offers good performance and quality. The V6 standard engine in the Tacoma gives you 236 horsepower with an estimated 23 mpg. It comes with comparable warranty coverage to other vehicles in its class. You may also be interested in the Ford Ranger and the Jeep Liberty.
