Ok, I know that this question has been asked thousands of times but I have to ask it again. I have an 84 GMC thats a two wheel drive. I want to make it a four wheel drive. I have seen numerous post that says to sell it and buy one but that is not an option. The truck is a family heirloom and i had to promise I wouldnt get rid of it. On top of that I have access to alot of the 4wheel drive parts that I will need at a very low price. There are a few main questions that are burning me up to know is:
1.) Are the frames exactly the same? 2x4 and 4x4?
2.) If yes to the above question, are the holes already there for the leaf spring brackets for the front end?
3.) Is there anything besides mounting the leafsprings that would have to be done?
Thanks for any help! Mark

Not quite the same. You will have to remove front suspension girdle/cross members and install 4x4 style cross members BEFORE you install spring mounts. Part of this swap it changing engine mount cross member too.

buy the time you change all that why dont you just put it on a 4x4 frame you still have to body lift or put a 4wheel drive tunnel in it or the cab will not clear the trans i have done a ton of these and if you cant for some resone find a hole frame cut and put the front 4x4 frame in but most of the time you cane find cheap and you wont have to lie and get rie of the truck or try to get the suspension strait

the front of a 2wd of that vintage is 4 inches narrower and has a diffrent shape than a 4x4's, I would suggest swapping the body onto a 4x4 chassis, also depending on weather or not your cab has a removable tranny tunnel you'll either have to replace the tranny tunnel (Dog House) or do a 2" body lift to clear the t-case, also you will have to cut a extras hole in the floorboard to accomidate the 4x4's shifter,
if it ain't dirty, you ain't doing it rite, RNC club motto

I say keep the truck as a daily. Go out and find a 4x4. If you promised not to get rid of it then don't. Plus you will need the daily so you can go get parts for your hobby. All the money and time you will drop in converting this truck, you could of went out and bought another one. Plus if it brakes you are not walking. Keep it simple. Unless you have lots of money.
