I have been looking to purchase a Cherokee for awhile and I've narrowed it down.
The first one is a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4, 4.0L Automatic
The second one is a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4x4, 4.0l Automatic

What would you recommend me getting?
I plan on lifting it, no more than 4.5", and using it for moderate offroading.

Also, what kind of changes would I have to make to the axles to accommodate the lift?
Any other information on what lift kits are better and things like that would be really appreciated!

Thanks!

a guy i know has a 99 cherokee lifted roughly 8.5in and 35in tires. he had to do driveshaft modifications but thats guna happen anyway. after 3in or so driveline issues come into play. i dont think there is much diffenrance between the 99 and the 00. look for the high pinion dana 30 up front on them. i know my 99 cherokee has it. and the chrysler 8.25 is slightly stronger than the dana 35 i think. i dont think thats an issue with either year your lookin into. they both should have the 8.25 axle. i have the sport model. i do not know the differance between classic and sport. i think its the trim. i do know that my buddies lifted cherokee has the high pinion dana 30 and thats a 98 sport model. i hope this helps. good luck!

Go with the 99, it is generally regarded as being one of the best years for the XJ. It will have the high pinion Dana 30 front, the 00 (and 01) will have the low pinion. The 99 should also have the distributor where the 00-01 has the Coil on Plug. Also the 00-01s are known for having problems with the heads cracking, I believe it is head casting 0331.

Depending on miles, condition, and price, I would probably lean towards the 99

i hear the cherokees, (the I6 motor in general) are good for 250K miles if maintained properly. i have 180K miles on my 99 cherokee sport and it runs very good. oil change every 3k and grease where needed.
