High Oil Pressure

I have a 2000 Jeep TJ with 107K miles on it.  The other day when on the expressway I noticed that the oil pressure was pegged at 80.  It never went down until I got off and came to a stop.  Then it only went down to around 50, but as soon as I started moving again it went right back up to 80.  I parked it for about 5hrs then checked the oil.  It was full and not bad looking.  I started it up and it went right back up to 80.  Once I started to move it lowered to about 70 but never went down until I stopped again.  Yesterday I just started it to see if it was still doing it and it was.  The oil was still full and not leaking anywhere.  Does anyone have any thoughts?  Thanks for the help.  Eric

Try connecting a manual pressure gauge to the engine and run it (not driving) and see what it reads on that and also on the gauge in the vehical.  Perhaps the electric pressure sender is bad or the gauge.  What did the gauge used to read?

It used to read right at 40.  Now when you turn the key on it goes up to about 20-30 then when you start it it goes to 80.

If it goes up to 20-30PSI even before the engine is running the problem is either in the gauge or the sender.  You could bring it to a service shop or if you have an ohmmeter and can get a Jeep dealer to give you the specs you can check it yourself.  Other wise you can just replace parts.  I would check it out before just replacing parts.

I would venture to say that your sending unit or the wiring in between that and the gauge is the issue. I would also check it all out with a manual gauge first. Then go on to further diagnosis from there.

I would also agree that you likely have sending unit issues and do as suggested above.

Never did come back to answer what was wrong.  It was the sending unit.  I replaced it when I changed the oil and now all it well.  Thanks for the info though.
