its time to figure out what gears to put in my truck...it is a 79 gmc 1/2 stock 350ci with a th350/np203 38" gumbo mudders and 3.08 gears in the 10 and 12 bolts non lockers/posi. i need to gear it because of course it is guttless when the case is in high range. i hate the factor that i can have it in high drop it into drive and get out and not have the truck move. i just cant figure out if i should put in 4.10s or 4.56s. i do like to drive the truck around and get it onto the highway every now and then but i also like to get the mud from the ground up to the top of the kc lights.

Holy crap... 38's on a 10/12 bolt! Thats asking for trouble.

I would run at least 4.88 gears, maybe even consider 5.13's and a 14bolt swap.

if i had a decent chunk of change to spare i would do an axle swap but funds are limited.also my dad had the truck since i was tall enough to run under and clear the t-case.im just trying to get it to where i can drive it for the winter and not have it guzzle an 1/2 tank just to go 5 miles around town.

You still need gears regardless.

Not having an overdrive transmission, 4.56 or 4.88 are good ratios for those tires. 5.13 would be a tad deep though.

Agreed, 38" is a lot of tire for those axles. Just take it easy if you go wheelin.

True. Disregard 5.13. I'd go with 4.88 for sure.
