I have a slight increase in the sound of my fuel pump. Is this a sign of going out? Changed the filter, still the same. "98" Silverado 4X4

is it a whining sound? wat year make and model vechile is it? on my wifes 2001 s10 crew cab, the fuel pump was whining really loud. i ask a few mechanics i know and they said that was normal. they said it was just the pump doing its job. now if it hasnt done that before, than there might be an issue. im not sure wat it is though. i hope this helps you.

My Jeep Cherokee's fuel pump has been whining for atleast 3-4yrs now with no problems.
Try running some trans fluid through your tank. About 1/2 a quart or so. You may smoke.

It lubricates it. Truck may smoke pretty bad for a bit. I haven't done it on my XJ yet as I am using it to tell how fast I am going. Yep another problem with the XJ is the gauges quite. Mine will off an on and I can tell by the speed of the whine how fast I am going.

all the gauges or just the speedometer? mine does that occasionally but its only the speedomoter and the tach. i just give it a little tap and its back to normal. i hear its just a loose connection or bad wire. simple to fix. havent had the time to take my dash apart to do it yet though.

Sometimes it is only the speedo and tach.. sometimes it is all of them, as it is right now. It is a connection problem on the back of the cluster. You can usually disconnect it, clean it, add some dielectric grease and you will be good for awhile. Your local Jeep dealer should also have an updated plug for the back of the gauges to fix this problem. I want(ed) to put in Autometer gauges so that I would have to worry about this anymore. I tried the tapping trick...which eventually lead to pounding and ultimately two of the mounting tabs for the cluster are cracked.

My 97 chevy 350 fuel pump started whinning and I was told that it was ok. It did it for two more years and then quit. Then I was told that it was a signing of it going bad. If the truck is getting hard to start, it's getting ready to go.
