I tried searching but didnt find anything relevant to what I was trying to accomplish.  I have a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 and the differential carrier in the rear end needs replaced, all of the gears inside the housing were in pieces.  So instead of rebuilding, we thought it might be easier and possibly a tad cheaper to find a whole assembly.  I dont really go play in the mud or anything and am usually on the pavement and do a decent amount of towing.  Now I was looking at the Eaton carriers at Summit Racing, but then was told they dont hold up?  I was just looking for some quick insight so we can get this thing out of the shop and running again.  Any places or names of where I could get a new, reliable  carrier would be greatly appreciated!

Eaton carrier? As in a Detroit Locker or Tru Trac?

You are correct though that if you can find a new axle it could be cheaper and easier to swap the entire unit instead of changing the gears.
