I wanted to know if I should go with a new steering column/box for my 1986 Chevy Silverado or should I start hitting the junk yards? I will be doing all the work and I want it to be economical for my wallet.

Here is more on the problems: At a stand still and the truck turned on it is difficult to turn the steering wheel and becomes easier to turn when I gas it a bit. Also, while driving I feel the steering loose. Does it sound like the steering box is shot or could the column be the culprit?

If it is the steering box, how can I tell if the steering column is reusable?

have you had the front looked at? an out of alignment, camber, or caster can cause the same isssue. The pump sounds like it my be worn out too or is low. Check the front first.
