I took my 83 van in to get serviced an the next day, or less than 200 mi, The trans,  failed. It started with a loud whining noise in 1st gear and it stop in 2nd and came back in 4th after a few miles it lock up in 1st.. Also the rear seal is now leaking.. The whole thing makes me wonder??. When the mechanic drop the pan the oil look good and clean and didn't smell to burnt, just a little and very little black in the filter an a little metal on the magnet, I then went and got  dount when I came back he was puting the pan back on.. I am wondering if he could have done something to make the trans, fail??? Please let me know if you got any ideas.. Thanks.. RVFlyfisher

Ok i know it isn't a 4x but i had a 93 tracer and went to change the fluid and filter and i had the same symptoms as yours(little smell, small amount of shavings, etc.) and the next day after i changed the filter and oil the thing started slippin and 2 days later it locked up tight. My guess is that their was something stuck in a certain spot and the movement of the new oil and the filter actually doin its job was too much and caused the stuck object(s) to cause a landslide of problems quickly and ruin the tranny. Sorry man but sometimes a tranny is just done and your service guy just aint to blame. Do what i had to do and go get a junkyard tranny and run it.  Good luck man...

btw: how many miles are on your tranny?

sounds like a case of bad luck to me, or possibly put the wrong fluid, or too much or not enough fluid in it
