I have a 1988 jeep wrangler with a automatic transmission it had a 4.2 in it and I replaced it with another 4.2 long block I Used my old flywheel wich was new and old starter that worked good when I removed it. But now that it is on the new motor it turns the motor and starts it but it grinds while doing it. Please any help with this would be great. thank you

Sounds to me like your new flywheel has more or less teeth per inch than the old one. This is causing the starter to jump or gring on the flywheel teeth. YOu will have to match the teeth per inch count from the new flywheel to the starter teeth. Make sense to u?
My bumper sticker says "NOT A HIPPIE JUST A WELL GROOMED MOUNTAIN MAN" LoL

I had the same problem with my '87 that is set up like yours-have the ring gear flipped over, that should do it. (auto's have flexplates-manuals have flywheel's). Also make sure the starter has the same amount of teeth as the old one. While the starter is out shine a flashlight in the hole and look at the condition of the teeth on your flexplate to determine if the teeth are rounded off or not-no sense in fixin something that ain't broke.

Go to your nearest auto parts store and get a starter shim kit, read the instructions and it'll be fixed in no time.
