Dana 30 , 27 spline -  reccomend tires no bigger than 33's ?
Dana 44 , 30 spline

I have a 97 sonoma , 4.3 , 5 speed , running 35x12.5's now .
But want to do solid axle swap. Some trailing,mud,rock- but is my daily driver . gears are going to be 4:56 .
I can get a set of Dana 30's , but should i go with the Dana 44 ?
I will probley go from 35's to 39.5's . so the dana 44 would be the smarter way to go ? next would be weight 30 vs 44 ? you can rebuild a 30 to be almost a 44 , but then would you just keep brakein axles ?

I know just thinking about weight for V6 , S-10 body style , will do chip later

Dana 30 junk...Dana 44 can work with 35 but wont hold up with 39.5. Dana 44 can be built to handle 39.5. Your starting down the slippery slope of modifications. Bigger tires mean bigger axles wich in turn means lower gearing and more horsepower to push it along. The 4.3 is a good motor but will run out of horsepower very quickly when you start pushing a bigger, heavier truck. My sugestion would be to go with the dana 44 and while you have the 35 on the truck look at beefing the axle up in stages. I think eventually what you will end up doing is putting a V8 under the hood because the V6 will not have the horsepower you want. Plan ahead and build your truck to the finished product. Might even think about buying a fullsize for wheeling and keeping the sonoma for daily driver.
