Its personal preference. And depends what you're driving. Diesel engine will give you more power, but it is usually accompanied by a heavier truck.

Don't be confused by power and torque..... diesel engines produce more torque than horsepower where a gas engine will produce more equal amounts just at different rpm levels. I've seen both engines in mud boggers and I would have to say is go with a big block gas engine versus a small block. But to compare it to a diesel engine, it depends on what is done to it to broaden the rpm range. Mud boggers usually run higher rpms than a trail rig. But again, it depends on what you are using the truck for.......

Diesel, it offers much more torque and fuel economy, they do require a different driving style and are much more resistant to water and soft mud with only minimal modifications. Engine revs are less important on diesels as the extra torque will pull you through a lot better than petrol, they just require gearchanges slightly less frequently due to the extra torque.

Spark plug burners are waay cheaper & less maintenance ,less weight, but if u got a monster rig go with diesel cause at that point weight will need a good ole coal roller& besides everybody loves a good smoke show diesels just have alot to them but can take a beating & keep on rollin.

If you go with an older diesel there is no electronics to be messed up by mud and water...

I see alot of people running with big blocks, but I have personally seen some small blocks that are torqued out and have more power than the big block.
