2.6L 4-cylinder cold idle

Hey, all- I've got an '89 Trooper with the 2.6L 4-cylinder fuel injected engine. Until it reaches normal operating temperature, it wants to stall. I used the diagnostic process, utilizing the two wires under the console bin and the blinking light code is telling me that it's probably the "fast idle solenoid". I can't find a fast idle solenoid when I check with parts suppliers, except once on a microfiche, I spotted a small length of pipe bent into a right angle. Once the engine is warm, it idles just fine, and, under all circumstances, seems to have mormal levels of power. Any ideas? Thanks

I have had two 90 troopers with 2.6L. One was federal and other was CA. both had a solenoid that is externally mounted on the firewall. It is air over vacum. There is a second vacum valve mounted on the intake manifold near the front. I am no expert but from what I have gathered the operation is fairly simple. The ECM controls the electric solenoind on the right side firewall/wheel well. The solenoid when activated bypases a controlled amount of vacum around the throttle body. When this happens you affectively have a small "vacum leak". This cuases the engine to idle higher. Without the solenoid you are correct in that it will iddle lower untill warmed up. What is interesting is that when the solenoid is installed, and the wires left disconnected, engine rpm will stay at a nice 1100 rpm. This is kind of nice if you like crawling along in 1st and 2nd gear 4L on trails without touching the gas. It will even crawl up hills that way. Kind of like a cruise control. But that is not how it is supposed to work. If your truck was origionally equipped and now does not have it I have this suggestion. Go to salvage yard and start looking at ohter trucks to see how this is supposed to be plumbed in.
