I have been reading for a while now about people swapping a 2.8 for a 3.4. Im new to 4x4 and i really love it. I really love my trooper my dad passed on to me and want fix it up like some guys out there. The engine swap interest me a great deal i would really like to know a lot more about it. Like how it is to do the job? What will i need? Stuff like that. What do i need to look for when buying the engine? I live in San Diego California and so how does the engine swap affect smog. If there is a someone out there who swapped the engine and lives in california i would appreciate you share your experience. thanks

Hello. I had an 86 Trooper and the factory engine was a turd!! If you are going to swap why not put a 4.3 chevy v6 into it? You will then be able to use the fullsize chevy truck tranny for extra toughness. As far as smog goes it think you just have to use an engine of the same model year or higher as the vehicle and include all smog related equipment from the swap vehicle( cats, carbon canister, pcv valve, ect.) I wish that i would have put my 93 stang 5.0 into my 86.....man that thing went ANYWHERE!!! that was the vehicle that originally got me into wheelin.......ahhh...memories!!!lol good luck man.
PS: you will also have to have the cooling system, and electrical system(ECU,wiring harness, ect.) modified to work. A swap is a pretty involved thing, BUT if you think EVERY ASPECT OUT and get all the parts you need it can go smoothly and be done in a LONG weekend! (Add a day or two for unlooked for problem) Good Luck man and Wheel that Super Trooper!!!!
My bumper sticker says "NOT A HIPPIE JUST A WELL GROOMED MOUNTAIN MAN" LoL

sounds good dude yea i have seen that it does take a a while to modify and get the swap done. Wish i had like a mechanic that would that type of stuff cause im no advance mechanic. but oh how i would like to have the swap for extra power. i found a thread on planetisuzoo.com that a guy wrote up his swapping experience and it looks like a lot of work. ( http://forum.planetisuzoo.com/viewtopic.php?t=17324 ) Well thanks for your opinion on my thread i really appreciate it.

If you are not mechanically inclined an engine swap is a bad idea. It is also very costly. These trucks are underpowered. they were designed that way. If you are not satisfied buy a truck with a v-8. Even there you can get caught up in the continual addiction for more horsepower. troopers are good trucks that run well and have some pretty good capabilities off road. Put your money into a locking diff for the rear. That is your most important investment. If you really drive off road you will notice that as your best improvement. With that improvement it will take some tough terrain to best this truck. If the power is just for the street, then buy another vehicle and sell the trooper to someone who appreciates the truck the way it is. I have had several 4cyl and v6 troopers 89-91. All are dogs. All drove everywhere even towing trailers. I climbed every hill I had a desire to climb. It was all done slowly. It's called trucking, not racing.
