What size Offroad trailer for my rig? Rookie needs advise please.

Can anyone guide me, a rookie to Offroad, on what size trailer to opt for.
I have a 4x2 2005 Mazda Drifter double cab 2500 inter cooler diesel. I am seriously considering building my own Offroad trailer mainly for affordability reasons. Reasearch done till now has not provided advice on a recommended trailer length / total mass that would be compatible with my vehicle. I realize I would have to stay away from typical 4x4 trails and contemplate fitting a winch for any 'unintended' predicament on the road.
Any words of wisdom for the uninitiated, on trailer size and any other tips for my circumstances?
