Gas vs Diesel

I have been looking into trading up from my current truck which is only getting 15-18 mpg to something that has similar power and ability but will get better gas mileage. I have seen a lot of adds for both gasoline and diesel engines and I really don't know a whole lot about diesels. I have seen that they get much better gas mileage and will work for a longer time. What do y'all think?
