so I work on a ranch In Southern Oregon. my work truck is a 85 f-250 I am constantly having to walk home do to my rigs lack of traction. my tires have fair tread but they seam to suck in the seamingly simplest conditions. (ie) damp grass mud puddels 1 inch of snow in the driveway. you know the stuff my minivan drives through everyday. the usual work is loading a trailer with 2 or 3 tons of hay and driving out into a field to feed the cattle. the truck belongs to the rancher, and like many ranchers he is a jerryrigger from birth. every thing he owns has been cobbled together from at least 6 previous somthings, that includes the tires on my work rig. I can't sell him on new or used rubber being that he has 10,000 used tires to choose from. buying a locker or the equivelent is also out. the truck does drive on road about 5 miles a day the rest of the time is in the  field. OK that said how bbaddley will welding the rear diff be on the rig it is in 4 low most of the time.

thanks for any help.

It wont hurt it at all, the biggest drawback I've seen on my previous truck's is that the rear tires tend to wear out faster if driven alot on the highway.

when you weld the spiders, weld them gear to gear, not to the cast carrier. cast is difficult to weld to. ive done a bunch of them with decent results. locked rearends can be tricky in the ice too.

Off-road it will be absolutely fine. On pavement your inside tire will scrub and wear out faster. Careful in snow as well.
