Wheelbase Length

Hi all,

I have heard some different opinions on wheelbase length.  I've been told the optimum wheelbase length is around 114".  I'm looking at a Ford Bronco with a wheelbase of 94".
What feedback can you give me on the difference this will make?

I will be starting my trail riding in Colorado with the goal of doing Moab next summer.

Thanks,
Kollossuss

Optimum wheelbase is closely related to your tire size (which has a great effect on your CoG).

Too much tire for your WB makes the rig less stable on steep climbs & descents (and lessens traction too).
Too much WB without enough tire leaves you with a poor breakover angle (prone to dragging the rig's belly and getting hi-centered on stuff).
You'll need to find the right balance between these two to best suit your intended use.

For conditions such as Moab, 33" tires should be about perfect on a rig with a 94" WB (if you can relocate the rear axle back a few inches, and the front forward an inch or two (say 97-98" WB), 35s probably would be superb).
A 114" WB demands at least 40-42" tires for decent rock-crawling work, but 33-35s would likely be fine for most milder-to-moderate stuff.
